Staphylococcus epidermidis is a commensal that lives on human skin. It is non-pathogenic in most circumstances. Chronically ill patients with indwelling catheters are prone to urinary tract infections caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis. This organism can grow as a biofilm, enhancing its ability to glide over surfaces (such as catheters).

Staphylococcus epidermidis is known as an aerobic gram-positive coccus but here we report on a strain isolated from an infected prosthetic hip site that only grew under obligately anaerobic conditions. The gram-positive cocci in clusters were isolated from the patient's hip specimens in pure culture under anaerobic conditions, but did not fit the criteria of any known anaerobic gram-positive cocci.

Sep 26, 2022 · Staphylococcus epidermidis is a coagulase-negative, gram-positive cocci bacteria that form clusters. It is also a catalase-positive and facultative anaerobe. They are the most common coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species that live on the human skin. In its natural environments such as the human skin or mucosa, they are usually harmless.
