We have surveyed the location and we have all the necessary information in regards to the type, height, even age of the trees, but I cannot seem to find the appropriate families of the trees that I need, i.e. pine, elm, etc.

The shadow will be circular (and not like you have shown). The cut view B is the trickiest part, since it requires something solid to be modeled for the tree trunk.
