House of Habsburg, royal German family, one of the chief dynasties of Europe from the 15th to the 20th century. As dukes, archdukes, and emperors, the Habsburgs ruled Austria from 1282 until 1918. They also controlled Hungary and Bohemia (1526–1918) and ruled Spain and the Spanish empire for almost two centuries.

The House of Habsburg (/ ˈ h æ p s b ɜːr ɡ /), alternatively spelled Hapsburg in English (German: Haus Habsburg [ˈhaːpsbʊʁk] ; Spanish: Casa de Habsburgo [aβzˈβuɾɣo]; Hungarian: Habsburg-család), also known as the House of Austria (German: Haus Österreich; Spanish: Casa de Austria), is a German dynasty which was once one of the most prominent royal houses of Europe in the 2nd millennium.
