When I clicked the green tick, the A13 cell showed the A12 cell value. When I deleted the contents of A13, it was replaced with a jumbled formula 'A7, A9'.

If the data range has no blank rows or columns, then you can easily select that using Ctrl + Shift + * (or CurrentRegion in VBA). If you have a look at Podcast 565 (ScrollBar Size) you will see a very easy way to correct the problem manually.
