In 1895, official recognition of historical sites began in Los Angeles under the formation of the Landmarks Club. In 1902, the California Historical Landmarks League in San Francisco, joined the cause to preserve the state’s history. However, it wasn’t until 1932, when the official state mandated organization first designated 20 sites as historical landmarks.
